LCD Television Buying Guide

Although the technology is relatively new, LCD TVs have come to completely dominate the television market in the last few years. Because LCD and other audio visual technologies have progressed so rapidly, it can be difficult to keep up with the latest developments.

We’ve put together a brief LCD Television Buying Guide to help get you started.

What is LCD?

LCD (liquid crystal display) screens are made up of electrically-charged liquid crystals that refract light from fluorescent tubes behind them. Colours are created by varying the electrical current to each of these crystals.

LCD TVs generally weigh less than plasmas, are more energy-efficient and have a higher native resolution.

Best-selling LCD TVs include the Hisense 19in (48cm) HD LCD TV - HL48V88, the TCL L32M11PVR 32" (80cm) HD LCD TV and the Palsonic 80cm (31.5”) Widescreen TFT LCD Television.

What is LED-LCD?

Some newer LCD models use LEDs (light-emitting diodes) to light the image instead of fluorescent tubes. LED-LCD models tend to be lighter and slimmer than other LCDs. They are also the most energy-efficient TVs available.

Popular LED-LCD TVs include the TCL 24" LED LCD TV (61cm), the Palsonic TFTV4932LED 48cm LED LCD TV with DVD Player and the Palsonic 23" LED LCD (60cm) FULL HD TV.

LCD TV Size

Start by considering the space in which your TV will be situated. While it is very tempting to simply buy the biggest TV you can afford, a massive screen doesn’t always make for the best viewing experience. If you find yourself sitting too close you’ll be looking at pixels; too far away and you’ll lose the fine detail of the image. As a general rule, the distance between your couch and your screen should be between two and five times the width of the screen.

Mounting your TV on the wall is a good space saver; just make sure your wall is capable of carrying the weight.

LCD TV Connectivity

Most modern LCD TVs feature multiple connectivity ports. Consider what other equipment you need to connect your TV to and find a model that has the right amount of connections for your different electronic devices.

Most Blu-ray players and gaming consoles will require an HDMI port; ideally, your TV will have more than one. LCD TVs with multiple HDMI ports include the TCL 23 Inch Full HD Ultra Slim LED LCD TV, the Teac 32" LCD TV with USB Recording (81cm) and the TCL 19 Inch HD LED TV.

Other connections you might need include:

LCD TV Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of pixels that make up an image. Basically, the higher the resolution, the sharper the picture. High definition (HD) resolution is 1366x768 pixels; “true” or “full” HD resolution is 1920x1080.

LCD TV Response time

Response time refers to the rate at which the liquid crystals in an LCD screen respond to a signal and change from one shade of grey to another. It is measured in milliseconds; the lower the number, the better the response time.

Built-in DVD players

Many modern LCD TVs come with built-in DVD players, saving you from having to find space for a separate unit and reduce the tangle of cords connected to your set.

Top-selling LCD TVs with built-in DVD players include the Teac 19" LCD DVD Combo TV (48cm), the Palsonic TFTV4932LED 48cm LED LCD TV with DVD Player and the Palsonic 21.6" (54cm) LED LCD HD TV with DVD.
