Coffee Machine Types

Espresso machines

The espresso machine market has exploded in recent years as more and more people discover the joys of having café-quality coffee at home or work. Espresso machines vary greatly in design, features and price, from very simple systems to high-end deluxe models.

There are a few basic types of espresso coffee machine, differentiated primarily by the level of automation they provide.

Manual

Manual machines are operated using a hand lever, which controls the rate at which the water is pushed through the coffee grounds. These machines are about as hands-on as coffee makers get, and require a fair bit of practice and skill.

Semi-automatic

One of the most popular types of coffee machine, semi-automatics use an automated pump to push through the hot water, and activation switches to turn the pump on and off. If you’re in the market for a semi-automatic coffee machine, consider these best-sellers: the Saeco Via Venezia Traditional Coffee Machine, the Breville Cafe Roma Stainless Espresso Machine and the Breville Espresso Machine 800 Class Coffee Machine.

Automatic

Automatic coffee machines grind the coffee beans and start and stop the pump that pushes through the hot water. With most machines, you will still need to froth and pour the milk, and load up the coffee beans.  Best-sellers include the Saeco Syntia Coffee Machine and the Breville Fresca Espresso Machina.

Fully-automatic

A fully-automatic coffee machine will do everything for you with just the touch of a button. These models will grind, tamp and extract the espresso shot; some even clean themselves. The only thing you need to do is load up the coffee beans. Popular fully-automatic coffee machines include the DeLonghi Fully Automatic Compact Coffee Machine and the Saeco Royal Cappuccino Coffee Maker.

Capsule coffee machines

A variation on the conventional espresso machine, capsule coffee machines have become increasingly popular in recent years. These models use sealed coffee capsules that contain pre-ground coffee – all you need to do is insert the capsule then run the machine. These systems save time and mess, and produce reliable quality coffee.

Pioneered by Swiss company Nespresso, capsule coffee machines generally use a separate milk frother.

Top-selling capsule coffee machines include the DeLonghi Citiz and Milk Nespresso Coffee Machine, the DeLonghi Nespresso Essenza Coffee Machine, the Saeco Lavazza Premium A Modo Mio Coffee Machine. For coffee in a hurry try the Nespresso Pixie Coffee Machine – Nespresso’s fastest model.

Drip filter coffee machines

Drip filter coffee machines – as the name suggests – drip hot water slowly over ground coffee beans through a filter. Drip filter coffee machines to consider include the Sunbeam Aroma Coffee Maker and the Breville Aroma Style Electronic Coffee Machine.

Coffee Percolators

A coffee percolator is essentially a type of pot that brews coffee. They work by recycling coffee through coffee grounds until it reaches the desired consistency. Try the Breville Cordless Cafe Percolator.

Grinders

Most aficionados would agree that freshly-ground coffee is the best. For a more flavoursome coffee, you can use a coffee grinder to grind your beans just before you use them, rather than using pre-ground beans. The Breville Coffee 'n' Spice Grinder and the

DeLonghi KG100 Coffee Grinder are among the best-selling coffee grinders.

Grounds bins

Grounds bins are a simple and easy way of getting rid of used coffee grinds. Try the Breville Bar Vista Coffee Grounds Bin.

Milk frothers

Milk frothers can heat and froth your milk in minutes with just the touch of a button. For perfectly-frothed milk, have a look at the Lattemento Milk Frother, the Breville the Milk Cafe Frother and the Sunbeam Cafe Creamy™ Automatic Milk Frother.

Milk jugs

For the perfect latte or cappuccino, a good quality milk jug – like the stainless steel Saeco Milk Jug – is a must.
